I’m excited about the Hero 5 Black for all those detectorists shooting their hunts mainly because of its 3 microphones that should eliminate much of the wind noise that plagues so many of our videos!
For my needs, I had to take a camera designed to jump off a mountain with and make it work it to filming for 4+ hours while covered in dirt. I wanted to touch it as little as possible to keep the dirt off so I added the BacPac, which not only gave me twice the battery, it gave me 2 usb ports to run an external lav mic and a USB charger. I’d film my entire hunt on a 128gb micro SD and go back and look for the good parts. This made for one silly looking hat as you can see in this post.
The Hero 5 has voice commands so I can say “GoPro start recording” when I get a good signal. The internal battery lasts over 2 hours instead of 1.5 hours. I can’t add a BacPac to run mic + power into it, but I’m hoping the 3 mics eliminate wind noise and if I want to power it for 5 hours I still can attach the USB charger, although I’ll need the included USB-C to USB adapter. (wtf is USB-C?) GoPro does make a UPS-C to 3.5mm/usb-c adapter for $40, so I could still run an external mic and power:
So even though the image quality has not changed from Hero 4 to Hero 5 black, all the features they have added (voice control, touchscreen, stabilization, linear view (no fisheye), waterproofing, 3-mic wind noise reduction, and more) has made this a winner for capturing detecting or whatever.
