I’m trying to figure out the best way to mount an action cam for making videos of hunts. Mounting the camera on the detector shaft was out, as this produces a bad jello effect in most videos and is disturbing to watch.
I have a chest strap, but I thought mounting it on my head would provide the most stable video. I tarted with a brown hat (shows dirt less) and drilled a 1/4″ hole in the brim. Then you need some kind of 1/4 20 thread. One of my options were these double threads.
Then I set about attaching the SJ4000 action camera I got. I’m working on a review video. Ideally I wanted to use it with the waterproof case as metal detecting can be a dirty business. But it’s a little too heavy. Not terrible, but after several hours it could cause some neck pain.
The lighter choice was to ditch the waterproof case and mount the camera with a Giottos ballhead. This is about the lightest ballhead I could find.
This is lighter but still not as light as I’d like. I just ordered this Midland visor clip, hopefully its plastic adjustable 1/4 20 mount will be something I can clip to my hat.
